Alaska Project Archaeology

The Office of History and Archaeology is the principal sponsor of the Alaska Project Archaeology program. It is part of a nationwide program that prepares educators to teach archaeology to students, primarily grades 4 through 7, using a series of student activities and curriculum enrichment material.

The goals of Project Archaeology include building pride in America's heritage, promoting a greater understanding of the past, and increasing protection for archaeological sites and respect for artifacts. The Bureau of Land Management has written, tested, and published three publications for the program, Intrigue of the Past: A Teacher's Activity Guide for Fourth through Seventh Grades, Project Archaeology: Investigating Shelter, a module that examines the cultural use and archaeological remains of the Northwest Coast plank house, and a student handbook, Discovering Archaeology in Alaska.

The Office of History and Archaeology annually offers a 2 day project Archaeology course for teachers in the Anchorage School District Summer Academy. This class provides teachers with training in the new Investigating Shelter curriculum.

The Office of History and Archaeology will be coordinating future Project Archaeology workshops for teachers and archaeologists. Project Archaeology curriculum materials are only disseminated through these courses and workshops. If you are interested in a workshop, please contact Richard VanderHoek with the Office of History and Archaeology at (907) 269-8728.
